Protectors was a team of fictional superheroes that starred in the eponymous title published by Malibu Comics. The team was made up of revamped versions of Centaur Publications characters that lapsed into public domain. Members of the team have also appeared in various limited series set in the same universe. It should be noted that a number of heroes underwent name changes do to trademark conflicts that have arisen since the originals were published.
During the 8th issue of the series, Protectors, along with their spin-offs, participated in the so-called Genesis Merge - a loose crossover that established that all of Malibu Comics' company-owned characters co-existed in the shared universe dubbed "Genesis Universe"
The Protectors was cancelled shortly before Marvel Comics purchased Malibu Comics. In the last issue of their title, all the characters (along with the rest of Genesis Universe) were killed/destroyed. This may not necessarily prevent Marvel from bringing the characters back, should they choose to, but at this stage, it seems likely that the characters (at least in their Protectors incarnation) will never be published again.
