Protected areas of Himachal Pradesh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Forest in Himachal Pradesh cover an area of nearly 21,325 kmĀ² that is about 38.3% of the total area of the state. The state government aims to provide green cover to 50% of the total area. Earlier forests were considered to be the main source of income of the state. Now the stress has been from shifted from exploitation to conservation. Forests have been completely nationalized under the supervision of Indian forest service . Reckless cutting of trees and sale of timber is now conducted by the State Forest Corporation. A World Bank assisted Social Forestry Project has been launched. The project aims at raising fuel, fodder and timber species to meet the basic requirements of the people so that it do not lead to the depletion of forests. An Enforcement Organisation has been established to keep a check on the illegal cutting of trees and smuggling of timber. An integrated water shed department project for Shivaliks is under construction. Another project for the afforestation of barren Kandi areas has also been undertaken with the coopreation of the World Bank. Steps are also been taken to intensify preservation and management. Hunting has also been restricted.[1] At present there are 32 Sanctuaries, 2 National parks and 3 Games Reserves.[2]
