Grigs are insects belonging to the grasshopper family Prophalangopsidae (formerly known in some classifications as Haglidae). There is only one extant genus in North America, several lesser known genera in Asia and at least 12 fossil genera.
The closest living relatives to the Prophalangopsidae are the family Tettigoniidae (katydids or bush-crickets); the evolutionary split occurred more than 230 million years ago in the Permian.
