Project SuperStar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Project SuperStar (Simplified Chinese: 绝对 SuperStar) is a singing talent search competition organised by MediaCorp and featured on Channel U in Singapore, hosted by Quan Yifeng and Jeff Wang. Project SuperStar was organised to uncover and develop potential talent in mandarin pop in Singapore. The format of the competition is loosely modelled after the American Idol, albeit with several differences. Twenty-four contestants were eventually selected to enter the quarter finals of the competition.

Contents

[edit] Format

The competition is split into male and female categories of twelve contestants each. The males and females will perform on 2 separate days, with the results of both female and male category announced at the later day at 11.30pm. The contestants are required to sing and have their performance assessed by judges and the public. The judges have a say in the score of the contestants, accounting for 30 percent of the score. The remaining 70% is obtained from telepolling and SMS voting from the public. The judging team is made up of Ye Peifen, Li Feihui, Xu Huanliang, Fang Zhonghua and Lee Wei Song, who are some of Singapore’s acclaimed singers and producers.

[edit] Quarter-finals

There are five rounds in the quarter-finals, including a 'revival' round for eliminated contestants. In each quarter-finals, every contestants will have to sing solo as well as a duet. In the 1st two quarter-finals, the male and female categories are sub-divided into two groups of six, in which the bottom-two ranked contestants in every group would be eliminated from the competition. A total of 4 male and 4 female contestants will be eliminated. NOTE: The first 8 eliminated contestants will NOT be given a 'revival' round.

The remaining 8 male and 8 female contestants will advance to the 3rd and 4th round of the quarter-finals, and each of the male and female categories are now sub-divided into two groups of 4, in which 2 contestants will be eliminated in each group. In all, 4 male and 4 female contestants will advance to the semi-finals while the other 4 male and 4 female contestants will have another shot at stardom when they will compete in the 5th quarter-final(revival round), in which only 1 male and 1 female contestant will advance to the semi-finals, forming the top 10 along with the other 8 contestants who went through the 3rd and 4th quarter-finals.

[edit] Semi-finals

The 5 male and 5 female contestants once again are divided by gender. There will be four rounds of semi-finals. The final five contestants of each male and female categories would undergo judging and elimination similar to that in the quarter-finals. The difference in the semi-finals was that there were no more duets anymore. The performance will be based on a theme each week. During the final 4 week, the crucial round in securing the position of a female champion and male champion, a live band will be put in place of the original music accompaniment, with each contestant singing 3 songs. Based on their final score, a male contestant and a female contestant would be eliminated each week. Eventually, the male and female winner of their respective categories would advance to the final.

[edit] Final

In the grand finals, the male and female winners would compete with each other in a live concert performance. Each of them would have to perform 5 songs in the Singapore Indoor Stadium in front of 8000 people. Before the grand final, they would be required to record and release limited editions of a single, of which the sales record will be tracked. The singles are only available for a few days. This will account for 30 percent of their score in the final. The remainder 70 percent will comprise of telepolling and SMS voting results. Unlike previous rounds, judges have no say in the eventual winner, though they will express their opinions on who is better in each round.

Due to some contract violation, a quarter-finalist and hot favourite Tay Ke Wei was disqualified from the Top 24, the latter's position was given to Sheila Ou Qian Yu, a customer service officer, who was ousted in the top 40 audition. Among the 10 semi-finalists, Daren Tan Sze Wei and Carrie Yeo Chia Ying were the only two who make it to the top 10 through the revival round. Carrie made it to the top 4, and became the eventual 1st runner-up in the female category, while Daren emerged the overall winner! The highest record in this season is currently 44.5 marks from Carrie Yeo of her finals round performance, but she did not become the female winner. The lowest record is currently 23 marks by Charlotte Loh Feng Yi, when she lost her confidence when she was ousted in the quarter-final and sang "terribly" (quoted from the judges) in the revival round, though many people, including contestants, thought she should receive a higher mark.

On 18th January 2007, the results of the competition were released. Lydia Tan Di Ya emerged as the female champion, with a higher overall score of public votes and judges score, accounting 62.1% as compared to Carrie Yeo's 37.9%. It was a tougher fight for the males, with Daren Tan Sze Wei, the male champion, accounting for 52.72% as compared to Nathaniel Tan's 47.28%.

The two competed in the Singapore Indoor Stadium on 4th February 2007. Unlike the 1st season, a contract is only limited to the overall champion, while the rest of the contestants have to wait for recording companies to sign them up. Daren started off the grand finals night with a 60-40 lead in CD single sales. Out of the five rounds of singing is also a tough fight, with Diya winning 3 rounds and Daren winning 2 rounds in the hearts of the judges. Daren won the title of the 2nd season's Singapore Project Superstar with the margin of 59% to Diya's 41%, the closest margin in any star searching competitions held in Singapore at this moment. Previous competition had margins of 61 to 39, 62 to 38, 65 to 35, 64 to 36 and 70 to 30.

The success of the Project SuperStar competition has also prompted MediaCorp to produce a series of similarly styled talent search competitions, such as SuperHost, Campus SuperStar and SuperBand. Malaysian Television Station, 8TV bought the program franchise rights and hosted their version of Project SuperStar which began on December 2005 and is also to begin its second season early February 2007.
