Proactiv Solution is a three-step acne treatment system launched in 1995, which was developed by dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. In North America, the product is sold mainly through infomercials and online, where buyers are automatically entered into a subscription business model. The Proactiv system sells for $39.95USD.

The Proactiv system comprises three different core products. All three steps are designed to work as a combination therapy for acne treatment, and are recommended to be used twice daily for best results.

[edit] Step 1: Cleanser

The Proactive cleanser is the first step in the system. The active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. The cleanser has a coarse texture that is meant to exfoliate the skin.

The Proactiv toner is meant to hydrate the cleansed skin. It contains witch hazel, Dog Rose fruit extract, aloe vera leaf juice, allantoin and anthemis nobilis flower extract.

The Proactiv repairing lotion also contains benzoyl peroxide. The dose is less than in the cleanser, and is left to dry on the skin to suppress bacteria build-up.

The Refining mask comes with the other three products. The main ingredient is sulfur. Its purpose is to unclog pores, heal existing blemishes and soften/refine skins texture.

According to the company's website, Proactiv Solution was created to treat mild to moderate cases of acne and may not be effective for people with severe cases. Benzoyl peroxide, one of the main active ingredients, may cause dryness and peeling of the skin. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions such as redness, itching, hives and swelling. Benzoyl peroxide may also cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.
