Privoxy is a web proxy program, frequently used in combination with Tor and Squid. It has advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page data, managing cookies, controlling access, and selectively removing content such as ads, banners and pop-ups. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.
Privoxy is based on the Internet Junkbuster and is released under the GNU General Public License. It runs on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, AmigaOS, BeOS, and most flavours of Unix. Almost any browser should be able to use Privoxy with a minimum of changes.
The most recent stable version is 3.0.6, released on November 19, 2006.
A popular add-on Privoxy ruleset is Neil Van Dyke's neilvandyke.action, which presently comprises over 7500 rules.[citation needed]
Privoxy combined with Tor is also used around the world to bypass Internet censorship in countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and China to circumvent Chinese government's Internet censorship named Great Firewall or GFW. Under these restrictions many websites are blocked by their respective governments including social networking sites, Wikipedia and all of its sister projects in China.
