Prison Justice Day

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prison Justice Day originated in Millhaven Institution on August 10, 1975 when the prisoners of that institution commemorated the first anniversary of the death of Eddie Nalon, who had committed suicide while in solitary confinement in Millhaven's Special Handling Unit(SHU).

The first observance took the form of a hunger strike and day of mourning. Another fast by six prisoners in Millhaven's SHU also began that day and lasted for eighteen days. By the following summer (1976) it had become an established memorial day. A day in which "prisoners pay tribute to the prisoners who have died in this countries prisons"[1]
