Prionus is a genus of beetles, more specifically a type of Cerambycidae (Longhorned beetles). They are large (25-70 mm) and usually brown or black. The males sport large pincers that are most likely used in fights with other (often larger) creatures. These beetles are nocturnal and are attracted to light. They are borers whose larvae feed on rotting wood or roots. All members of the genus Prionus have twelve or more antennomeres on their large antennae. Common species include the California root borer and the broad-necked root borer.
