Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (titled Salad no Kuni no Tomato Hime in Japan) is a video game by Hudson Soft originally released in 1984 for the NEC PC-8801, NEC PC-6001,FM-7 and MSX Japanese home computers.
It was ported in 1988 to the Famicom (or 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America).
Its characters are primarily cartoonish anthropomorphic vegetables.
[edit] Plot
Despite a simple and rather cliché premise (a knight must rescue a captured princess and restore order to the kingdom), its plot is fairly complex by 8-bit console gaming standards. Taking the role of Sir Cucumber, a knight, the player must defeat the evil Minister Pumpkin who has kidnapped Princess Tomato. Early on, Sir Cucumber gains a sidekick, Percy the baby persimmon, who offers advice and helps throughout the quest.
[edit] Gameplay
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom plays similarly to a text adventure, though due to the NES' lack of a keyboard accessory, the possible commands are represented by buttons which line the sides of the screen. Possible commands are MOVE, LOOK, CHECK (used to examine things), TALK, TAKE, USE, GIVE, BUY, HIT, FIGHT (to challenge enemies to rock, paper, scissors), PRAISE (for flattery), DUMP (for getting rid of inventory items), ITEM, and PERCY (to get help from the sidekick character).
