"Princess Toadstool for President" is the fifth episode of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
[edit] Synopsis
Bowser, along with Larry, sends out some giant Paragoombas to eat the Mushroom Kingdom's crops, but Mario and Luigi easily take care of them. Princess Peach then challenges Bowser to run against her in the kingdom's next presidential election, a deal he agrees to. However, since his nasty demeanor could cause a problem in the running, Ludwig sprays him with a potion that makes him act nice.
With the help of his new nice-guy attitude, Bowser easily manages to obtain the approval of the Mushroom People, much to the confusion of Peach and the Mario Bros. Later, at the local Founder's Day picnic, Peach makes a convincing speech to her people, but Ludwig and Larry try to assassinate her by causing a literal landslide involving the blocks she's standing in front of. Fortunately, she manages to survive.
Sometime later, the Mario Bros. find out that Bowser's using a potion, so they sneak through Darkland and into Bowser's Castle, where Ludwig is mixing up another batch of the potion. Luigi distracts him and Larry long enough for Mario to dump the potion out. Bowser is furious with this, and when he tries to act nice to his voters without any help, Peach, having been informed by the Mario Bros., unmasks him, and as a result, he loses the election so badly that even the Koopalings have voted for Peach.
[edit] Trivia/Goofs
- Bowser refers to the giant Paragoombas as being from Big Island, but in the actual game, the level only has gigantic regular Goombas, and no Paragoombas.
- Since the Mushroom Kingdom is a monarchy and not a republic, it should not actually have a presidential election.
- Princess Toadstool's short speech that warns the Mushroom people of Koopa is similar to the famous line ("ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country") spoken by President John F. Kennedy in his 1961 inaugural address.
- This episode's plot and outcome was later used in "Sonic is Running," an episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (another DiC Entertainment cartoon based on a video game).
- The featured song of this episode is a cover version of "Great Balls of Fire", during syndicated reruns the music was replaced by an instrumental, however this episode and Kootie Pie Rocks are the only two episodes that the music is not restored on the DVDs.
- This is the only episode during the syndicated run that keeps the original title "Captain N and the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3" after the opening.
- When Princess Toadstool says, "There's an election coming up..." the background is incorrectly placed over the animation cells, causing her to appear gigantic.
- When we see the green blocks that the Mario Bros. come out of when they find out Koopa's using a nice guy potion, we first see a column of one block, then two blocks, then three, and then four. But when Mario lays the block back in place, we see two columns of two blocks.
