Princess Elizabeth Stakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Princess Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for three-year-old and above thoroughbred fillies and mares run over a distance of 1 mile 114 yards (1,714 metres) at Epsom Downs Racecourse in early June.

The race was originally run for three-year-old fillies only at the Epsom Spring meeting in April and was recognized as an Epsom Oaks trial. It was downgraded from Group 3 to Listed status and eventually discontinued after the 1991 running.

In 2001 the race title was revived with the re-naming of the Victress Stakes, a Listed race which was introduced in 1995 at the Epsom Derby meeting, open to all fillies of three years and over. This version of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes takes place over the same distance as its predecessor, and was raised to Group 3 status in 2004.
