Prince Yamashina Kikumaro

His Imperial Highness Prince Yamashina Kikumaro (山階宮菊麿王, Yamashina-no-miya Kikumaro-ō^?) (3 July 1873 - 2 May 1908), was the second head of the Yamashina-no-miya, a collateral line of the Japanese imperial family.

[edit] Early life

Prince Yamashina Kikumaro was the son of Prince Yamashina Akira and Princess Katsura Sumiko, a half-sister of Emperor Kōmei. He was adopted by Prince Nashimoto Moriosa in 1880. However, Prince Kikumaro, returned to the Yamashina-no-miya family following Moriosa’s death. On 2 February 1898, he succeeded his father as the second head of the Yamashina-no-miya house.

On 14 September 1895, Prince Yamashina Kikumaro married Daigo Yoshiko (4 December 1878 – 11 November 1901), a daughter of Marquis Daigo Tadayori. Prince and Princess Yamashina had two sons:

HIH Prince Yamashina Takehiko (13 February 1899 - 10 August 1987)
Marquis Yamashina Yoshimaro (b. 5 July 1900 – 29 January 1989)
HIH Princess Yamashina Yasuko (b. 31 October 1901)

On 2 February 1902, the widowed Prince Yamashina married Shimazu Hisako (7 February 1882 – 26 February 1938), daughter of Prince Shimazu Tadayoshi. Prince Yamashina and his second wife had three sons.

Prince Yamashina Kikumaro attended the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy and received a commission as a sub-lieutenant in 1894. He served a tour of duty aboard the IJN Yakumo from 1902 and served in the Russo-Japanese War, where he was awarded the Order of the Golden Kite (4th class). By 1905, he rose to the rank of captain. He enlisted in the Naval War College in 1908, but died suddenly at the young age of 35.

Prince Yamashina Kikumaro died on 2 May 1908. Dowager Princess Yamashina (Hisako) died on 26 February 1938.
