Prime Minister's Strategy Unit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Prime Minister's Strategy Unit (PMSU) provides the UK Prime Minister with in-depth strategy advice and policy analysis on his key priorities. It has three primary roles. First, carrying out strategy reviews and providing policy advice in accordance with the PM's policy priorities. Second, supporting Government Departments in developing effective strategies and policies. Third, conducting occasional strategic audits, and identifying key challenges for the UK Government (see the UK Strategic Audit 2005 below).
Due to its strong links with Number 10 Downing Street is is often erroneously referred to in the media as the No 10 Strategy Unit, however it formally reports through the Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell and its complement of around sixty staff are mostly civil servants rather than political special advisers. On a day-to-day level it works closely with the Number 10 Policy Directorate, which is headed by David Bennett. While there is no direct equivalent in other countries, the PMSU has many functions that overlap with the Executive Office of the President of the United States.
Stephen Aldridge is the current Director. The previous Director was Geoff Mulgan.
It is based in the Admiralty Arch, part of the Cabinet Office's buildings in Whitehall.
