Primal sounds

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Primal sounds are noises or sounds one makes that are not parts of modern, normal human speech. These sounds come out in surprising instances of frustration, fear and pain. Most primal sounds are difficult to transcribe. Grunts, grumbles, growls, groans, screams, gasps, and moans are examples of these sounds, which all humans make on occasion. Rather than try to imitate them, authors most often describe them: a shrill cry interrupted her sleep; he winced perceptibly, a low moan escaping his lips. Some primal sounds, however, can be expressed with onomatopoeic words, such as ohhh or mmm.
