[edit] PRESS 53

Press 53 is a small independent publisher of literary fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The press was founded on October 1, 2005 by award-winning short story author, poet, and songwriter Kevin Watson of Winston-Salem, NC. In November of 2005, Mr. Watson agreed to partner with another award-winning writer, Sheryl Monks, of Hamptonville, NC, and their partnership became official on January 1, 2006. During the first year of operation, Press 53 published books by Kevin Watson, Doug Frelke, Tom Sheehan, Al Sim, John Ehle, Joseph Mills, Valerie Nieman, and Joseph L. Anderson.

In the spring of 2006, Press 53 reprinted the classic historic novel The Land Breakers by John Ehle. Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, sent a personal letter to Press 53, praising John Ehle and thanking Monks and Watson for reprinting one of her favorite novels. This letter spawned news articles that brought national attention to the small publisher.
