Awards, Emoluments and Prizes
It is within the President's prerogative to grant awards and prizes to Northern Ireland students of architecture, notably the RSUA Silver Medal, RSUA Bronze Medal and the Alan Barnes Travelling Scholarship.
While the President has input into the RSUA Design Awards, these are managed by a sub-committee of the RSUA Council and as such are outside his direct remit.
[edit] Past Presidents
Mervyn Black, 2004-06
Mervyn Black's term in office did not continue the course set by his predecessor. Instead, it focussed much more on restructuring and reorganisation of the Society. In a way, this could ultimately deliver the goals of the Mackel years, as such a fundamental reordering will necessitate fundamental change throughout the Society.
Black's Presidency saw the formation of several new committees, among them the committees on Sustainability and Constitutional Reform, two areas that are set to dominate the agenda of Trevor Leaker's tenure at Mount Charles.
Ciaran Mackel, 2002-04
The Mackel Presidency was characterised by a concerted effort to open the Society to a more centrist viewpoint.
Traditionally, the practice of architecture in Northern Ireland has been unionist-dominated. In his term of office, Mackel sought to tap into the political paradigm shift experienced in Northern Ireland society at large and transfer some of its effect into the RSUA.
In this context, moves where made towards establishing Irish as a working language of the Society. Links were also forged with architectural organisations in the other Celtic nations, including the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW) and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).
