Honduras declared its independence from Spain on September 15 1821. From January 5, 1822 to July 1, 1823 Honduras was part of the Mexican Empire of Agustín de Iturbide. On July 1, 1823 Honduras along the rest of Central American states (Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) declared their independence from Mexico to form the short lived Federal Republic of Central America also known as United Provinces of Central America.
