Preserve Our Island

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Preserve Our Island is a grassroots organization, created by residents of Maury Island (Washington, USA), that is opposed to Glacier Northwest and their efforts to mine aggregate on Maury Island. Preserve Our Island “is committed to serving the interests of the Vashon/Maury Island community by insuring that the proper scientific data is available to permitting agencies and that all environmental and legal protections are brought to full consideration.” On POI's website ([1]) there is a wealth of information about Maury Island for the public to become knowledgeable. This information includes environmental reports, photos of the island, newspaper articles, news updates and how to get involved. POI's website also includes a comprehensive timeline (http://www.preserveourislands.org/POIWeb/Background/History/index.html) that is beneficial in grasping the scope and process that POI and Glacier NW have been going through since 1978 to present day. Information in support of POI and the Vashon Maury Island community is also available at The People for Puget Sound (http://pugetsound.org/index).
