[edit] Plot

When Lorelai and Rory arrive for Friday night dinner, they are shocked to see Emily and Richard loudly arguing. Emily is upset because Richard has been refusing to go to any events. The next day while having tea with her friends, Emily tries to make excuses for why she and Richard have not been going out anymore. When Rory stops by, Emily's friends convince her that Rory should debut at the Daughters of the American Revolution Debutante Ball.

Lorelai is horrified to learn that Rory will be having a debut, but she agrees to help. She also calls Christopher (who has moved to Boston) and asks him to present Rory. Rory also has to get Dean to agree to be her escort; he agrees in exchange for her watching Battlebots with him for a month.

When Christopher arrives, Lorelai is shocked to discover that he has gotten a job and traded in his motorcycle for a Volvo sedan. He also comes with the Compact Oxford English Dictionary that he promised Rory on his last visit.

At the ball, Richard is very hostile and angry. Lorelai tries to keep him and Emily calm. She finally learns that Richard has been so upset because he is being phased-out of his job at the insurance company. Both Emily and Richard spend the ceremony feeling miserable.

After the ball, Lorelai tries to convince Christopher to spend the night with them, but he explains that he has to get back to his girlfriend. He reveals that he's living with a woman named Sherry, and that he made all of the changes in his life for her.

While eating with Rory at Luke's, Lorelai reflects that her mother must be lonely without anyone to confide in. At the end of the episode, she visits her mother "to just hang" and reminds Emily that she can talk to her whenever she wants.
