Prerana Deshpande

Prerana Deshpande is one of the leading exponents of Kathak dance of the present generation. Known for equal mastery over various aspects of Kathak, she is particularly renowned for her grace, abhinaya (expression) and command over the laya (rhythm). Her deep understanding of music and literature has led to scholars and critics acknowledge her as a 'Complete Kathak Artist'. Prerana Deshpande studied under Guru-Shishya Parampara of learning from legendary Dr. Rohini Bhate, the doyen of Lucknow and Jaipur gharanas.
Ms. Deshpande had her formal education at the Centre of Performing Arts of Pune University, India (graduating with a Masters degree in Dance) with Gold Medal and also Bachelors degree in Mathematics. She is married to Mr. Supreet Deshpande, who is a famous Tabla artist of rare calibre and lineage.

As a dedication to her art to which has given meaning to her life, Prerana Deshpande established 'Nrityadham' - an Institute for Performing Arts in Pune, INDIA where she imparts Kathak training to students from India and abroad.
[edit] Creative collaboration
In 2007, Prerana Deshpande is collaborating with famous Odissi danseuse Sujata Mohapatra in a Kathak - Odissi collaboration inspired by the World Heritage Site of Ajanta & Ellora. The production titled 'Ajanta Comes ALive - Tribute to Ajanta & Ellora' premiered in the cultural capital of India - Pune on February 18, 2007 to a rousing applause from scholars, critics and even the uninitiated for the choreographical creativity, artistic handling of a complex theme yet maintaining individual purity of the two forms - Kathak and Odissi.
