==Welcome== Hello Pratheepps and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you've chosen to join us. This is a great project with lots of dedicated people, which might seem intimidating at times, but don't let anything discourage you. Be bold!, explore, and contribute. If you want to learn more,

Wikipedia:Bootcamp teaches you the basics quickly,
Wikipedia:Tutorial is more in-depth, and

Five Pillars of Wikipedia

Float around for awhile until you find something that tickles your fancy. One easy way to do this is to hit the random page button in the navigation bar to the left. There are also many great committees and groups that focus on particular jobs. My personal favorite stomping grounds are Wikipedia:Translation into English and Wikipedia:Cleanup for sloppy articles. Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has several other wiki projects that you might enjoy.

There are a few crucial points to keep in mind when editing. Be civil with users, strive to maintain a neutral point of view, verify your information, and show good etiquette like signing your comments with four tildes like this: ~~~~ If you have any more questions, always feel free to ask me anything on my talk page or ask the true experts at Wikipedia:Help desk. Hi, please read WP:IUP to understand about the image use policy. The tag you have used for the photograph of O. V. Vijayan is inappropriate. The book cover is also of a french translation and hence can be deemed inappropriate. Also, photographs taken by self are no longer encouraged to be uploaded under copyright tags. They need to be uploaded as free images, i.e. GFDL-self, PD-self and other licenses. Also, consider not putting the license on the image. Welcome!! --Gurubrahma 12:05, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Indus_Water_Treaty.pdf

Thanks for uploading Image:Indus_Water_Treaty.pdf. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 21:00, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Characters

Your category of Characters and some of the sub-cats are duplicates. There is already a large tree of categories for exactly this subject at Category:Fictional characters. Your Characters in Novels and Dramas are covered by Category:Characters in written fiction. The latter might be possible as sub-cats of Category:Characters in written fiction, but you would need to be very, very explicit in defining what goes down into the sub-cat. Category:Characters in written fiction is horribly overpopulated, and moving articles down into sub-cats would be a good thing. The problem is getting a set of well-defines sub-cats that can split up the contents of Category:Characters in written fiction smoothly.

For now, I'm going to nominate Category:Characters for CFD, as that one is totally a duplicate. The other two may be salvagable, but may need renames to be consistent. I'll leave them be for the moment to give time to decide what to do with them. - TexasAndroid 21:41, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] OK!!

probably [Category:Characters in epics] downward can be kept as it is (ie as attached to [Category:Characters in written fiction])looks like there's no major duplication for this cat. Pratheepps

[edit] Category:characters in Hindu epics

When you move a character article from the ramayana and mahabharata cats to the characters in ramayana and mahabharata cats, can you please delete category:Ramayana epic or category:mahabharata epic from the article? It's pointless to put both since the one of the cats are inherited from the other.--Dangerous-Boy 10:08, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Why so few Wikipedians are engineers?

I am trying to understand why there are so few Wikipedians who are graduate engineers. Once I get a grasp on that, perhaps I may be able to formulate some ideas on how to attract more experienced engineers to become Wikipedians. It would be very helpful if you would respond to these a few questions:

  • Are you a university graduate engineer?
  • Please indicate in which of these engineering disciplines you obtained your degree:
    1. Aeronautical or aerospace engineering
    2. Bioengineer or biological engineering
    3. Chemical engineering
    4. Civil engineering
    5. Electrical engineering
    6. Environmental engineering
    7. Mechanical engineering
    8. Petroleum engineering
    9. Other
  • In what year did you obtain your degree?
  • What attracted you to participate in Wikipedia?

If you would rather not answer these questions on your Talk page, then you may respond on my User talk:mbeychok page. Or you may respond to me via Wikipedia's email which I have enabled on my User:mbeychok page.

If you would rather not respond at all, that's fine also. Regards, - mbeychok 04:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian Occupied Kashmir

I would like to enquire why did you move Indian Occupied Kashmir to Indian Administrated Kashmir without reaching a consesus ? I would be reverting your changes in few days because we did not reach consesus. Siddiqui 17:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Only Pakistan calls it 'Indian Occupied Kashmir' or 'Held Kashmir'. Only India calls it POK. Also these are not the local names of these places. I mean what the local people call their place!!

'Pakistan administered Kashmir' & 'Indian administered Kashmir' are more internationally used phrases to talk about these places. But these phrases are indicative of the status of the places more than the name (Noun) itself. Nevertheless the above mentioned phrases are used as the place names when addressing these places internationally.

I’ve mentioned the reason, in the space given (for moving). And if any one search for 'Indian Occupied Kashmir' was re directed to 'Indian administered Kashmir' (before the new 'Indian Occupied Kashmir' article was created yesterday). Similar to anyone searching for POK or 'Pakistan Occupied Kashmir' is redirected to the 'Pakistan administered Kashmir'.

A mention of what each countries (India & Pakistan) call the places eachother is vital information that needs a mention in the article; not to state that as the name (proper noun) itself (since wiki is worldwide environment).I think that is stated at the very begining of the article itself.

Anyway I’m not an authority in this subject in any sizable dimension. I can contribute only by way of applying some commonsense and understanding on these kinds of subjects. May be fetching some links, wikify, add a few photos, etc etc….

All the best with your efforts :)

[edit] Your Forgiveness article contribution

Last March you added a quote to the forgiveness article from Huston Smith. I could guess how this relates to forgiveness (ie I would guess--to the one or the alone there is nothing to forgive since all is one) Is my guess on the path? From your perspective, how is this quote best explained to the non Hindu as relating to forgiveness. speet 19:14, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

This is basically a prayer the priests chant. Mostly used to illustrate the the history of the concept of forgiveness (ie with God). This could be of Rig Veda period origin. That is at least 2000 BC. Also illustrates the knowlede people had at those times about man's ignorance (of the knowledge of the concept of God, and the universe at large). So they were basically asking for the forgiviness for the actions that they were/are forced to perform due to ignorance. [edit] Astapovo

Hi! I moved this article to Lev Tolstoy (settlement), because it was renamed in 1918–1920 and re-wrote the article altogether, adding whatever pieces I was able to find on the web. I believe, coordinates, provided by you in the article Astapovo, were appropriate. Hence, I incorporated them again, a bit adjusting them. [edit] The tomb picture on Safdarjung

Hello, Pratheepps. Sorry to bother you, but I removed the tomb picture from the article above, as several anon users complained that it was not actually Safdarjung's tomb but Humayun's. I have no idea if they're correct or not, but since you were the one who added the picture, you probably do! So, if you feel they're wrong, by all means put the picture back in again, or if you think they're right, please take appropriate steps -- personally, I have no idea the picture is correct or not and only removed it because of those complaints, so I leave it to your judgement. =) Thanks for your time. -- Captain Disdain 04:01, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What is this the barcode of?

Hi Pratheepps. I note with interest the barcode that you recently added to illustrate the ISBN page (8175257660). Please reveal what book this is for! My usual searches couldn't find the title . EdJohnston 17:25, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

- I've created this barcode to illustrate the ISBN barcode. Thought everyone easily would recognise those barcodes printed behind books when explaining the concept of ISBN. The ISBN used is valid & owned by me, but not used on a published book. I thought it would be less misleading to use an actual ISBN than say a hpothetical string like 1234567890 to generate a barcode for illustration :)

[edit] Image watermarks

According to Wikipedia's image use policy, user-created images may not be watermarked. This means that writing URLs and copyright information on Image:1008linga.jpg, Image:Coracle Hampi.jpg, and Image:Temple plan.jpg is grounds for the images to be deleted. Since you created the images, I wanted to offer you the chance to upload new versions without a watermark before I nominate them for deletion. This applies to any other photos you have uploaded that I may have missed. If you need assistance in uploading new versions, feel free to contact me. Thanks, and happy editing! Kafziel Talk 16:48, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

After a second look at your userpage, I see that this actually applies to almost all of the images you have uploaded to Wikipedia. Since there are so many, I'll give you a bit more time to upload new versions of all of them. It would be a shame to have to delete so many nice pictures just because you weren't given enough time to fix them. Kafziel Talk 16:53, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Ok.You may delete whatever image of mine that doesn't comply with the Wikipedia's image policy.I'll keep this in mind if & when i upload a new photo.....Pratheepps 12:41, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Are you sure? All you need to do is click "upload a new version" and you can replace the watermarked photos with original unmarked versions. Even if you don't have the originals anymore, a little bit of cropping will fix a lot of them. As an example, I edited Image:Bheema.jpg to remove the watermark from the bottom. It only took a few seconds in photoshop to crop the photo, and now it can stay. Kafziel Talk 15:07, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Just gone through the deletion policies and procedures.... I opt my images that don’t match the wikipedia policies to be deleted off rather than tweaked or edited. I would contribute new images, so that the images I’ve added would meet both the criteria: of what image I would like to contribute & what is acceptable for Wikipedia .Pratheepps 07:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, I've edited quite a few of the photos to make them acceptable already; you licensed them when you uploaded them to Wikipedia, so now anyone is free to change them. I've fixed 20-25 of them, mostly by simply cropping a tiny bit off the bottom. But I have only worked on ones that seem important to articles, and I am compiling a list of the others that I haven't fixed. So if you want, when I'm done, I'll give you the list and you can request that they be deleted. Kafziel Talk 13:42, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] White deer

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article White deer, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Chick Bowen 06:00, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm helpless as I'm no wildlife expert to build an article on it. I thought a white deer is an unsusual animal and i wanted to share the white deer's photo i've taken for the people interested in this area. Pratheepps 12:46, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
It's a good shot. I added it to this page and this category at Commons. Chick Bowen 02:22, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging for Image:Shiva-elephanta.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Shiva-elephanta.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 12:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Is the copyright tag not enough?Pratheepps 12:13, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I would say the copyright tag should be sufficient, as it identifies you as the author. However, you don't need to worry about this one anyway. It is on the list of images you wanted deleted per our discussion above; the watermark is pretty prominent and hard to crop out, and the image is not used in any articles, so I didn't bother trying to edit this image. So it will be deleted anyway. Kafziel Talk 14:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
FYI, OrphanBot ignores anything inside of the licensing tag when looking for source information, unless it is tagged with PD-self, GFDL-self, or something else that implies self-authorship. If you add "Image by Pratheepps" or something like that outside of the tag, then OrphanBot will be fine with it. I know it's annoying, but computers are annoying sometimes. ;) --BigDT 14:09, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images

Okay, I've finished fixing as many of the important images as I could. Here is a list of images with watermarks that were either too hard to fix nicely or do not seem to be used prominently in any articles. I know the list looks kind of long, but it's just a fraction of your uploads. Between here and the commons, I cropped and/or photoshopped about 35.

  • Image:Kailash3.jpg
  • Image:Naga7.jpg
  • Image:Shiva-elephanta.jpg
  • Image:Carving3.jpg
  • Image:Carving4.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort1.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort2.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort3.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort4.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort6.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort7.jpg
  • Image:Kannurfort8.jpg
  • Image:Naga10.jpg
  • Image:Naga11.jpg
  • Image:Naga12.jpg
  • Image:Naga8.jpg
  • Image:Naga9.jpg
  • Image:Nage2.jpg
  • Image:Palliyodam aranmula.jpg
  • Image:Pillerarchitecture som.JPG
  • Image:Safdarjungtomb.jpg
  • Image:SCTIMST.jpg
  • Image:Temple elephant 4.jpg
  • Image:Temple elephant 3.jpg
  • Image:Temple elephant 1.jpg
  • Image:Temple elephant 5.jpg
  • Image:Boat safari in the wildlife santury.JPG
  • Image:Backwaters sunset.JPG

Your options now are as follows:

  1. You can place this list at Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics and see if anyone there is willing and able to fix more of these photos and incorporate them into articles. It's quite possible that the project will have uses for them but simply does not know they are here. I recommend doing this, but you are certainly not required to do so.
  2. You can request that these images be speedy deleted by placing {{db-author}} on the description page of each one. An administrator will delete them as soon as possible.
  3. I can make a mass nomination of them at Wikipedia:Images for deletion and they will be deleted after discussion. This is probably not the best option, as it takes time and, in fact, the community may go against your wishes and refuse to delete them. I will hold off on this option because the first two are certainly better for everyone.

Let me know what you plan to do, and if you need help with any of the steps I will be happy to lend a hand. Kafziel Talk 14:52, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletions

I think maybe I wasn't clear enough; you can't use {{db-author}} on any of the images I fixed. That is only valid if nobody else has worked on them, which I have. When you uploaded these photos you released your rights to them; anyone is free to edit them (including removing the watermarks) as long as you are still credited as the author. I spent a lot of time fixing those images and they can no longer be simply deleted. Only the ones in the list above can be. Kafziel Talk 19:13, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Also, any pictures that did not have watermarks on them in the first place, such as Image:Toda Hut construction details.JPG or Image:Silveroak.jpg do not need to be deleted. Kafziel Talk 19:25, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image deletions

Hi- while patrolling through CAT:CSD, I noticed some image talk pages you have tagged with {{db-author}}. Two things about this (1) the image page itself should be tagged - there is no reason to create an otherwise empty talk page. (2) Only things you accidentally created can be deleted in this fashion. Anything else needs to go to WP:IFD. --BigDT 19:22, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Edusat-90.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Edusat-90.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sandstein 22:53, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Aysha (Kerala)

A tag has been placed on Aysha (Kerala), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

The person is not notable and the location already has an article: Kerala

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Kimon 14:37, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
