As the City Commissioner of Police, his main focus has been generating people-friendliness in his 26,000 strong force, besides bringing in professionalism and introducing modern scintific methods of policing. Some of the achievements of Kolkata Police during his tenure have been - an increase in the visibility of policemen on the streets, better fleet management through an increase in patrol cars, introduction of night policing through the installation of 86 conspicuous manned Kolkata Police Assistance Posts at almost every alternate street crossing in the city, an improvement in traffic control resulting in faster movement of traffic.

In recent times, there has been a spate of outreach programmes by Kolkata Police. The Nabadisha Programme encourages children from under-privileged sections of society to join schools that are jointly managed by 48 Police Stations of the Kolkata Police and a number of NGOs. Children also participate in sporting events like the annual Friendship Cup Para (Neighbourhood) Football Tournament, and boxing, shooting competitions. Mukherjee believes that this will reduce the number of children turning to crime.
