Prank Call of Cthulhu is the 58th episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. It first aired October 21, 2005 on Cartoon Network. The title and the episode are parody of the Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft. This is the second episode which parodies the Cthulhu mythos - the first one was Big Trouble in Billy's Basement, which features Billy summoning "Yaw Saw-Haw" a parody of Yog-Sothoth.

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

"I hate caller ID! It's ruining my life! My LIFE!"

-Billy

Billy and Irwin are making prank phone calls to various people, and are, oddly, always foiled. They learn why when Mandy, Harold (Billy's dad), and Grim all inform them about Caller ID, and the fact that people know that it is Billy who is trying to prank them despite various disguise efforts on his part.

Billy starts to search for a phone that doesn't have caller ID, now the bane of his existence. His journey brings him to his basement, where he finds a mysterious phone shaped like a skull. He begins to pick it up, but Grim intervenes just in time, warning Billy that the phone is the phone of Cthulhu, a dark and destructive being from another dimension.

Of course, Billy isn't stopped, and he walks down to the basement with Irwin in tow. They pick up the phone, and it sucks them in (except for their shoes).

Grim and Mandy discover Billy's escapade, and follow them into the cafeteria of Cthulhu's dimension. There, they learn that Billy and Irwin have been employed by Cthulhu himself to make prank calls.

It's only after Billy and Irwin resume work that Grim and Mandy realize Cthulhu's plot. Everybody that Billy and Irwin prank call are turned into tentacled monsters akin to the great Cthulhu himself.

Mandy, at this point, gets angry, and devises a counter to Cthulhu's plans. She confronts the beast while he is playing golf, and traps him forever in the phone lines between Endsville's and Cthulhu's dimension.

At the end of the episode, Grim smashes the phone (neglecting to bring Mandy, Billy, and Irwin back before the only conduit between both dimensions was destroyed)and Irwin's courtship attempt, based on the grounds that he's the only boy left in the dimension, (Billy was carried away by a green octopus) is once again repulsed by Mandy.

[edit] Trivia

  • The scene where Billy is making a prank phone call to his dad, when Billy responds to a hail with "This is Kelly Clarkson," is a parody of the famous phony phone call made on the Howard Stern Radio Show which was made by High Pitch Eric to Eric the Midget, where Eric the Midget recognizes High Pitch Eric voice and says "This is High Pitch" Where High Pitch responds with "Who's High Pitch? It's Kelly Clarkson".
  • Second time a "To Be Continued..." tag is shown since Brown Evil.
  • Seventh appearance of Hoss Delgado, who appears as one of the victims of the prank calls.
  • Character: James Silverman - It is the name of the production coordinator for The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
  • The heads on the dolls that Grim plays with in the bathtub are similar to that of his own and that of Billy's mom.
  • Third time that Grim suggests that he and Mandy should forget about Billy and go on with their lives since A Kick in the Asgard and Which Came First?.
  • Billy's blood type is O.
  • There are two possible references to the film Spaceballs one is when Billy's dad gets punched and his face is shown on the back of his head and he says "Why didn't any one tell me my butt was so big?" which is similar to the part of Spaceballs when President Skroob (Mel Brooks) gets teleported to another area and his head is on backwards. The other scene is when Grim is playing with the dolls which is most likely a reference to the scene in Spaceballs where Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) is playing with dolls that look like him and Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Grim is also saying lines almost identical to the ones Rick Moranis says in Spaceballs.
  • The woman in the bee costume is a spoof of Bumble Bee Man from the Simpsons.
  • At the end of the intro, Mandy says something backwards. She's actually saying "Cartoons will rot your brain!", in reverse.
  • On Dish Network's description the title is "prank call of cthula".
  • This episode contains some sexual humor. When Harold and Gladys are watching TV,Harold starts to get close to her saying its been awhile since we had some alone time together until they are interuppted by Billy and Mandy. When Grim and Mandy find Billy and Irwin in the other demension,Billy is a half monster. His nose and mouth turn purple.Mandy says your nose looks like a cuddlefish and Billy says chicks dig cuddlefish. Then Mandy says his mouth looks like a disgusting sucker.Billy says Chicks dig.... he is interuppted by Grim. What Billy actually meant was chicks dig lips.
