Pragma-dialectics

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pragma-dialectics is an inter-disciplinary approach to argumentation analysis originally developed at the University of Amsterdam by prof. Frans van Eemeren and Rob Grootendorst. In the pragma-dialectical approach, argumentation is seen as a means of resolving the difference of opinion between a protagonist and an antagonist. The two parties try to come to a resolution by assessing whether their standpoints are capable of withstanding each other's criticism. The University of Amsterdam hosts the ISSA (International Society for the Study of Argumentation) conferences, which are held once every four years.
