Pradakshina

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pradakshina, meaning circumambulation, consists of walking around in a circle as a form of worship in Hindu temples ceremonies in India. The devotees walk around the sanctum sanctorum, the innermost chamber of the shrine housing the the temple deity. Pradakshina is done in a clockwise direction an odd rather than even number of times. Circumbulatory walking around the shrine, by keeping time, is a common form of Hindu prayer. The pathway made of stone around the shrine is called Pradakshina path.[1]

Pradakshima is also a part of the Hindu marriage ceremony.[2]
