Talk:Power creep

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Can this term be applied when a particular guild/allied guilds/group of people in an MMORPG obtain items far superior than those of anyone else and use them to greatly increase their advantage, to a point where they unbalance the server for everyone else? Going with only the first sentence of the article, that seems to be a 100% match but the rest of it suggests against it. Just curious. Ashanthalas 23:04, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

No, I believe it refers specifically to the modification of the game world itself and its rules, not to the players participating in that world. Buttboy666 17:59, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree. Terms commonly used for the behaviour you talk about include "abusing the rules", "cheating", "minmaxing" and others (not necessarily true, I'm just saying these terms are often used. I guess the term that should be used is "skill", but this is seldom admitted...). In any event, it's not powercreep. Powercreep in a MMORPG would be when new character classes, weapons etc in an expansion is simply better than those available previously, thus making a good argument for players to buy the expansion. Do note, I'm not talking about making available new and higher levels, deeper dungeons etc. I am talking about abilities and equipment that are simply better at any given point than older ones, effectively replacing the older options - if you have bought the expansion/supplement, that is. 85.227.226.250 10:45, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Often, power creep isn't intentional or "evil". It's just a consequence of the fact that better stuff sells. The ideal case is to make any new options totally balanced with the old ones (it doesn't matter of you play a core product class, or if you play a new expansion product class), but as we all know, this can be extremeply difficult to achieve. This being the case, it makes financial sense to err on the side of making new stuff more powerful (because God forbid it's less powerful - then it's "useless"), thus the gradual introduction (or "creep") of power into the game. 85.227.226.250 10:49, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One word usage?

Anyone with an account care to create a new page for the single word "powercreep" (with an Wikidictionary entry as well as a redirect Wikipedia page to here)? 85.227.226.250 10:52, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
