"Power to the People" was recorded by John Lennon at Apple Records in England and released on 12 March 1971.

It entered the charts on 20 March, 1971, and remained there for nine weeks. It was John Lennon's fourth solo single and it was credited to John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, which on this occasion comprised of Lennon, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon and Yoko Ono. Extra backing was supplied by Rosetta Hightower and "44 others". Phil Spector assisted with the production.

John Lennon's perception of the song changed during the 1970s. Readers of John Lennon's only autobiography (included in Skywriting by Word of Mouth) learn that he was no longer pleased with the song, and that he could only support Hunter S. Thompson's claim that the anthem was "10 years too late." This comment can be found in the gonzo journalism classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The b-side features "Open Your Box" in the UK and "Touch Me" in the US. Both songs are by Yoko Ono.
