Powelliphanta Sp.Haast not yet described |
Powelliphanta Sp.Haast is a rare undescribed and endangered large terrestrial mollusc in the family Rhytididae, endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is found on the hills behind Haast in the west of the South Island.
The shell is smooth, glossy, and rounded with a very narrow umbilicus. Coloration is tan-brown on top with a greenish-brown base. There are a few, sparse, black axial streaks, on the lower half of the shell only.
Deer have caused many snail deaths through trampling, and Thrushes in particular are taking a high toll now that the cover has been reduced by deer browsing.
Major diameter is up to 35 mm, and height up to 18 mm.
Powelliphanta Sp.Haast is classified as Range Restricted by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
