Ohiyesa "Pow Wow" Smith is a Western hero published by DC Comics. He is a Sioux who is a Sheriff of a small wild west town, where he is known as a master detective. He preferred to be addressed by his proper name, Ohiyesa, but the white citizenry took to calling him "Pow Wow" so stubbornly that he eventually gave up and accepted the nickname among them.
Smith first appeared in Detective Comics #151 in 1949 and distinguished himself as the only western feature in the book. Eventually, his strip was moved to become the feature of Western Comics which ran until 1961.
Originally the Pow Wow Smith character was located in the modern West. Later stories were set in the 19th century. It was eventually retconned that the Old West character was the ancestor of the 1940s character. Since then, he has remained as a historical figure in the DC Universe whom the more popular heroes have met in time travel stories occasionally.
U.S. Marshal Ohiyesa Smith, a present day descendant of the Pow Wow Smiths, appeared in Robin Annual #6, a Western pastiche that also featured versions of the Trigger Twins and Nighthawk.
