Poulnabrone dolmen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poulnabrone Dolmen (also know as The hole of the sorrows) is an ancient portal tomb in the Burren, County Clare, Ireland, dating back to the Neolithic period, probably between 3800 BC to 3200 BC. It comprises a twelve foot tabular capstone supported by two slender portal stones, and bordered by a nearby cairn.
A crack was discovered in one of the portal stones in 1985. Following the resulting collapse, the dolmen was dismantled, and the cracked stone was replaced. Excavations during this time found the remains of sixteen adults and children interred under the monument. An axehead and a number of flint heads were also found.
