Portlaw

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portlaw (Port Cladach) is a town in Waterford County, Ireland. Situated 10 miles west of Waterford City on the river suir. It was once home to a very succesful Cotton Mill of which most of the towns population would have worked in. The town has a main high street with a bakers, butchers, grocers, bars, Heritage Centre and a catholic and a protestant church. Portlaw's economy is not as strong as it once was, many residents now look for work in nearby Waterford City instead of taking on more traditional jobs such as farming and cotton production.

Portlaw has a closely knit community where Catholics and Protestants co-exist peacefully most of the time. The town's main attraction is Curraghmore House, a manor sitting on the outskirts which is the seat of Lord Waterford Marquess of Waterford. The manor has 100 acres of land and is open for tours all year round.
