Porthmadog cross town link
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Porthmadog cross town link is a narrow gauge railway being built to link the Welsh Highland Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway in Porthmadog [1].
This railway was historically called the Junction Railway [2], and has also been called the Harbour Branch.
The railway previously existed as part of the Welsh Highland Railway, and was pulled up after that railway closed.
It is now being rebuilt using new powers obtained by the Ffestiniog Railway. The new railway will run from Harbour Station on the Ffestiniog Railway to Pen-y-Mount Station on the Welsh Highland Railway.
The route will be as follows:
- Junction with the Ffestiniog Railway at Harbour Station.
- Cross Porthmadog High St and the River Glaslyn across the Britannia Bridge
- Around the back of the now closed Co-op (Leo's) supermarket (due Winter 2006/2007) [3]
- Across the back streets, in front of the old mill (due Winter 2006/2007)[3]
- Across the Cambrian Railway on the level (completed Nov 2006) [4]
- Along the track bed of the Welsh Highland Railway
- Junction at Pen-y-Mount Station with existing line to Porthmadog (WHR) Station (completed Jul 2002) [5]
