Port Jefferson Station, New York

Port Jefferson Station is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 7,527 at the 2000 census.

Port Jefferson Station is primarily served by the Comsewogue School District, although a very small portion of it is covered by the Three Village Central School District, as well as the Middle Country Central School District.

Port Jefferson Station is located at 40°55′27″N, 73°3′42″W (40.924093, -73.061656)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²), all land.

Port Jefferson Station, once named Echo, was named after the train station of the same name. The train tracks mark the northern boundary between Port Jefferson Station and Port Jefferson.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,527 people, 2,600 households, and 1,885 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,100.8/km² (2,849.1/mi²). There were 2,656 housing units at an average density of 388.4/km² (1,005.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 88.42% White, 2.23% African American, 0.16% Native American, 3.76% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.61% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.10% of the population.

There were 2,600 households, out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.34.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $57,330, and the median income for a family was $63,185. Males had a median income of $50,179 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,875. About 3.7% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.
