Port Askaig has a hotel, a patrol station and shop next to the port but has very few households.

[edit] Renovation Project

The link to Oban is likely to be expanded in the near future because the Scottish Executive are around 50% through of a £7M civil engineering development in Port Askaig which will result in much enhanced berthing facilities for larger ferries and commercial and pleasure craft. The last fase of this operation started in November 2006 and will be completed in April 2007. The pier has been closed since 20 December 2006 and is due to reopen in time for the summer Caledonian MacBrayne ferry timetable.

Port Askaig is the base of the Islay RNLI lifeboat which is called out ten to twelve times a year.
