Port Arthur Bearcats

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Port Arthur Bearcats were a men's ice hockey team based in Port Arthur, Ontario, now part of the city of Thunder Bay. In 1911 Port Arthur played the Ottawa Senators for the Stanley Cup and lost 11-4 in a one game showdown, however the name was eventually dropped.

As the club had played without a nickname for a few years, local fans and the newspaper lobbied the club to adopt the name of the previous incarnation. After playing out the city championship series, the team agreed to add the nickname for the remainder of the Allan Cup trail where it lost in the final series to Halifax.

The Bearcats ceased operations in 1942. The name reappeared in 1946 with a new Port Arthur club that operated until the merger of Port Arthur and Fort William in 1970.
