[edit] FOXHOUND

[edit] Naked Snake

Main article: Big Boss

Naked Snake

Naked Snake (voiced by David Hayter in the English version and by Akio Ohtsuka in the Japanese version) reprises his role as the protagonist from Snake Eater. While he is already awarded with the title of Big Boss, he still goes by his old codename. He is taken captive by his former unit FOX (believing that Snake holds the remaining half of the Philosopher's Legacy) and finds himself imprisoned in a South American base. He manages to escape only to learn that he is convicted of conspiring with the FOX unit's revolt along with his former C.O., Major Zero. To prove his innoncence, Snake sets out to form his own team of specialists.

[edit] Roy Campbell

Roy Campbell (v.b. David Agranov and Toshio Furukawa) is the future executive officer of FOXHOUND and Solid Snake's future CO. In the game, he is part of the Green Berets unit that is sent before Naked Snake to the San Hieronmymo base to neutralize the members of FOX, but is taken captive during the effort after all of his teammates are killed. He meets Snake in the cell next to him, while the two are under captivity. Roy escapes with Snake and helps him form Snake's squad. He serves as Snake's primary radio contact and in several missions, he drives a truck used to transport captured enemy soldiers.

[edit] FOX

[edit] Commander Gene

Gene (v.b. Steve Blum and Norio Wakamoto) is the charismatic commander of the FOX unit. Known under the codename of Viper, he became the unit's central member after Snake left. He is the one leading the FOX unit's revolt and is hoping to turn the San Hieronymo base into Army's Heaven, a new nation, run for and by soldiers. He is the product of the Successor Project, the goal of which was to create the "ultimate battlefield commander"; The Boss was the model for the experiment, making him and Snake 'like brothers,' mirroring the relationship between Solid Snake and Liquid Snake. His reflexes are faster even than Null's, and his voice was given a special manipulative power. This is shown during Gene's speeches where his voice apparently has an mind-altering affect on soldiers and those loyal to him. The most prominent example of this is his voice's affect on Elisa, who changes to her split personality Ursula upon hearing it. Snake kills him at the end of the game and obtains the funds for Army's Heaven. In his career it is revealed he had been into political science outside the military (explaining the reason behind the disposition of his speeches), as well as an adequatly prominent medical doctor.

[edit] Lieutenent Cunningham

Lt. Cunningham, demolitions and interrogation specialist

Cunningham (v.b. Noah Nelson and Daisuke Gouri) is a huge African American member of FOX and a former CIA lieutenant. He has an artificial leg which replaces the one he lost in battle. Was formerly known under the codename of Boa when he first enrolled in FOX. He is the one who brought Snake into San Hieronymo. While he feigns loyalty to Gene, he is actually working under direct orders from the Pentagon. His objective was to force Gene to deploy Metal Gear and launch a nuclear strike over the Soviet Union (and thus, tarnishing the CIA's reputation as an efficient organization). He attempts to gain Snake's cooperation, but Snake refuses to take part of the Pentagon's plot and attacks Cunningham. Cunningham fights Snake in a flying hovercraft armed with a Gatling Gun. After Cunningham is defeated, he attempts to blow the base with a Soviet-made Davy Crockett, but his hovercraft is badly damaged during the battle with Snake, causing it to explode, killing Cunningham. He shares his surname and a similar face appearance with the Benson Cunningham character from Snatcher, probably as a reference to this Hideo Kojima's game, although their clothing and roles are drastically different between themselves. In his career he is revealed to be an arms specialist (in FOX presumably) and a quarterback most likely given to his large stature.

[edit] Null

Further information: Gray Fox

A young Gray Fox as the 'Perfect Soldier'.

Null (v.b. Larc Spies and Jun Fukuyama) is a ninja-like member of FOX who originally met Snake in 1966, at Mozambique as a child soldier. He is the result of an experimental Super Soldier program created by the philosophers, which apparently ended in failure. Null was the only recorded success, and as most men would go mad in minutes from the extream training, he was though to be a lost number- explaining how he received his codename.

Trained by the CIA to be the "Perfect Soldier", he carries out his objectives without any hesitation, feelings, doubts or memories- his only purpose is "to complete the mission." When he is not fighting, he is kept inside a coffin-shaped sensory deprivation water tank, intended for resetting his memories as to prevent him from turning against Gene. It is eventually revealed that Null is a teenage Frank Jaeger, the character who would later join FOXHOUND under the codename Gray Fox. Naturally, as a child soldier, he had no career before even becoming what he is at this point in the series.

[edit] Python

Python
Python

Python (v.b. Dwight Schultz and Yusaku Yara) is a former war buddy of Snake who was presumed dead during a top-secret mission in Vietnam. He was wounded in battle and left without care and his body subsequently lost the ability to regulate its temperature. Left alone, his temperature would rise constantly to the point of death.like "mr.freeze" As a result he was fitted with a special cooling suit filled with liquid nitrogen which allows him to survive with his abnormal disability. He can also freeze objects that are close to him by flushing the liquid nitrogen inside his suit around the environment, though by doing so he looses some of the cooling agent, making him comment on how hot things are getting. He resembles horror film villain Pinhead from the Hellraiser series due to the pins of his head. Unlike other bosses, there are two different outcomes to the player's battle with Python depending on whether he is defeated lethally or by stamina-drain, indicating a possible return of the character in later series. He survives in the latter and joins Snake's squad as a unique character. Most likely prior to his service in the military, he was a quarterback and a scout according to his in-game career stats.

[edit] Ursula & Elisa

Image:UrsulaFOX.jpg
Ursula, one of the most Powerful psychics in the Communist world.

Ursula and Elisa (both characters voiced by Tara Strong and Saori Goto) are twin teenage sisters with ESP abilities (including precognition) who were survivors of a nuclear explosion in East Germany. They were taken by a lab in East Germany, in which they were subjected to power-amplifying experiments. The sisters were then adopted by Gene, with Ursula (the more powerful of the two) becoming a member of the FOX unit and a loyal follower of Gene, while Elisa became a researcher who watches over Null. Elisa helps out Snake during the mission, until it is revealed that Elisa and Ursula are not really sisters, but alternate personalities of the same girl as a result of the experiments that were conducted on her. Ursula/Elisa fights against Snake with Metal Gear RAXA. She survives the battle and turns against Gene when he threatens to launch a nuclear missile, but Gene overpowers her and stabs her to death. While dying, she predicts that Naked Snake will build his own Metal Gear and after that, one of Snake's sons will "bring the world to ruin", while another would save it (foreshadowing the future events from Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots). The personification of Elisa has the dominant knowledge of a chemist and a doctor, while the personification of Ursula has the dominant knowledge of a nutritionist according to both their in-game career stats.

[edit] Supporting characters

[edit] "Ghost"

Further information: Sokolov

Ghost (v.b. Brian Cummings and Naoki Tatsuta) is a mysterious radio contact who reveals the existence of Metal Gear to Snake. Later it is revealed that he is actually Sokolov, who survived the events of Snake Eater and was commissioned to develop Metal Gear.

[edit] Ocelot

Main article: Revolver Ocelot

Ocelot (v.b. Joshua Keaton and Takumi Yamazaki) plays a minor (in the sense that he appears very briefly), but important role in the story. He is Gene's telephone contact and near the end of the game, he assassinates the successor to his former employer from Snake Eater, the DCI.

Ocelot can be recruited into Snake's unit during gameplay by contacting a specific frequency number near the end of the game. After contacting him, he will appear as part of the player's team during the next playthrough. This, however, does not affect the plot in any way.

[edit] EVA

After Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, EVA is presumed dead, after disappearing in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1968. She appears in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops as a recruitable character by completing a side-mission. Later on, it is revealed that she was fired by PLA Intelligence after giving them a fake microfilm she thought was the Philosopher's Legacy. She escaped from China before they could kill her and became a freelance pilot/deliverywoman. She is also inside the magazine in-game as the centerfold.

[edit] Skowronski

Skowronski (v.b. Nick Jameson and Tetsu Inada) is a loyal colonel of the Red Army and a former fighter pilot. He is the commander of the San Hieronmymo base. After Gene starts his rebellion, Skowronski's men turn on him. After Skowronski tries to kill Python but fails due to Python's armor, Python locks him up in the cell. Snake finds him and frees him after his drunken rant. Later on, he tries to kill Gene by shooting at him with a minigun while he is operating Metal Gear. Elisa (while she is "Ursula") then throws Skowronski from the cockpit by using her telekinetic powers.

[edit] Jonathan

A member of the Red Army, Jonathan is notable for being the first character who joins Snake's squad. He helps Snake during the mission after being convinced by Snake and Roy that Gene would threaten his fellow Russian countrymen. Even though he is dressed like a regular enemy soldier, he is considered a unique character by the game due to his small role in the plot. He cannot be killed under normal circumstances and is the only character besides Snake that cannot be sent to Cyber-Survival mode. He is killed off in the storyline when he saves Snake by taking two bullets for him and thus removed from the player's team. Despite his name, he is apparently unrelated to another character with a similar name
