Pons Cestius

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pons Cestius (Italian: Ponte Cestio) is the first stone bridge from the island to the right bank of the Tiber. It was built during the first century BC, soon after the pons Fabricius.

In the fourth century the pons Cestius was rebuilt by the Emperors Valentinian I, Valens and Gratian. The bridge was rebuilt using tufa and peperino, with facing of travertine.

During the building of the walls along the river between the years 1888 and 1892, the bridge was demolished and rebuilt, making wider the two side archs. The central arch reproduces the old one, and was rebuilt using the old material.
