Ponkunnam

Ponkunnam is a town in eastern high-ranges of Kerala, India, part of Kottayam District. Nearby towns are Kanjirappally, Irattupetta and Palai.

K.K road (Kottayam-Kumali road), now a national highway, passes through the town. Kottayam is around 37 km. K.K road is an easy way to Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

It is at an altitude of 495 Metres above MSL sea level.

This part of Kerala is famous for its fertile lands and rubber plantations.

A big majority of Syro-Malabar christian believers also live here. Muslims and Hindus are also here mostly Tamil-Vellalar/Chetty's converted to Islam as in other parts of the high-ranges and Idukki district.

Famous Novelist and short story writer Ponkunnam Varkey lived hear. Hazy Mathew Ponkunnam is a christian Poet known to this area.
