Ponce de Leon Middle School

Ponce De Leon Middle School is a public-magnet middle school in Coral Gables, Florida. The current population (as of July 2006) is about 1200, a drop from the 1400 students enrolled in 2005. Part of the Miami-Dade County Public School System, it receives both area students magnet students who wish to come for its 3-year International Baccalaurate (IB) program and its International Studies (IS) programs. The school also offers a full-time gifted program.
The school, under direction of former principal JoAnne Gans, received an A from the State of Florida in proportion to its overall F-CAT scores. It held this grade until recently when new F-CAT scores dropped the rating to a B. The current (2006) principal is Anna Rodriguez.
The school was founded in 1924 by Robertson Olsen. It was originally a high school and later became a middle school. Unlike many area schools, Ponce has block classes (3 periods a day alternating) rather than 6 classes a day.
The teacher of the year was Mr.Washkaliske of room H123.
