[edit] Portal management

I am saddened that much of the content is dated and several links are dead. I think that a jaded portal is worse than no portal at all. Surely whoever ploughed this field should tend it? Fenton Robb 12:02, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that person has left Wikipedia and this portal lays essentially dormant. --cj | talk 17:04, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

It only needs a Wikipedian who has edited many portals and has experience with portals. -Code Napoleon

That I have. Time, I don't.--cj | talk 01:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually, having a number of people would also work, and they needn't have had to have experience on Portals before. It is kinda obvious once you've been around Wikipedia for a while. I changed the featured article a little while back when I got bored of the previous one. People just need to do it themselves when they have time, until then Electoral reform in New Zealand will remain!! (ha ha). --Midnighttonight 02:04, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
  • It's been more or less updated. It will, obviously, still need work going forward. --DMG413 00:37, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Hurrah! It's very much improved; but I wonder of it is wise to have a portal quite so 'newsy' - unless the links are automatically updated, this costs a bit of time and effort that mght be better employed enriching the content. Also, it may well overlap other wiki news sources and over time become partial. The changes already made are a great improvement. Fenton Robb 08:28, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

What is needed now is a list of what will be the next inline, ways of nominating articles etc. I think we have just enough people to make this portal work, the more the better of course.

I propose that we select a new article/biography/picture each week. News and current affairs can update as needed. Thus, I have added the sections below.--Midnighttonight 08:55, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nominate an Article

Please add new articles to the bottom of the list. Articles must not have any tags (stubs, POV etc.), be related to the sphere of politics and be of a high quality

[edit] Nominate a Biography

Please add new articles to the bottom of the list. Biographies must not have any tags (stubs, POV etc.), be related to the sphere of politics and be of a high quality

  • I must say that the biography of David Cameron has been improved dramatically. Abcdefghijklm 16:32, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
  • John W. Johnston was just made a GA plange 03:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
  • I've been working on Wesley Clark's biography, I'd expect it to pass it's GA nomination when someone gets around to it and then I'll be taking it through an FAC. If you feel he's political enough to be featured at the Politics portal, I think this article is of fine quality to be featured. Staxringold talkcontribs 22:07, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nominated a Picture

Please add new articles to the bottom of the list. Pictures must have a relevant article which must not have any tags (stubs, POV etc.), be related to the sphere of politics and be of a high quality

[edit] Feature management

I have two suggestions for managing the "Selected article", "Selected biography", and "Selected picture":

  1. Let's set up these in a queue, as done on Portal:Law, Portal:Geography (featured picture), and some other portals. I suggest these features rotate on a weekly basis, using the {{CURRENTWEEK}} system variable (see Help:Variables).
  2. For the articles and biographies, it's my preference to use articles listed as featured articles or good articles. I have set up a list of these at Portal:Politics/Featured articles, and bolded those articles that have appeared already on the portal.
    1. For articles suggested, but not listed as either "featured" or "good" (such as Workers' Party of Korea), I suggest they go ahead and be nominated as a Good article, and then they can be used here.

Any thoughts? -Aude (talk | contribs) 23:53, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Per WP:BOLD, I've gone ahead and set up the pictures to change automatically each month. I have made a page for May 2006 and one for June 2006. At some later point, before July 1, we need to queue up additional pictures. I pulled the Montreal picture from commons:Commons:Featured_pictures/Places/Architecute and the Austria picture from Wikipedia:Featured pictures. Such featured pictures that are available and fit for "politics" tend to be government buildings. Though, I'm open to using other "selected pictures". The one stipulation is that they shouldn't be Fair use pictures (like the Time magazine cover), as issues have arisen over using Fair use images anywhere beyond the article namespace. -Aude (talk | contribs) 00:21, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] News archiving

I have set up a news archive page, Portal:Politics/News/Archive. When items are removed fromn the news feature, please copy them to the archives (so they don't entirely disappear, and readers can find them). Also, does anyone has suggestions for improving the archive page? Right now, it follows the same format as Current events, but without the side boxes. -Aude (talk | contribs) 13:53, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal box-header

One more proposal here... I suggest we update the coding of the portal, to make use of Portal:box-header and Portal:box-footer as done with most of the other portals. The big difference with using box-header is the spacing between the title bar and the feature box would go away, but the spacing between feature items would remain. I have tested it out [1], and would like to hear any feedback, suggestions, or opposition to this before implementing it. -Aude (talk | contribs) 14:27, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I support the reformat.--cj | talk 01:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Communism

Portal:Communism opened, please add it, I would do it, but I cannot figure a nice layout in the related portals box. Thanks! Afonso Silva 14:03, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Western Betrayal

I've nominated the Western betrayal article for improvement. Poland is grossly over-represented there, the other nations sometimes have nothing at all (eg. Ukraine), or only a tiny paragraph (eg. Croatia). I am posting it here too, as I'm not sure how often the nominations section is checked by anyone. (A nom from the 4th May is still there) +Hexagon1 (t) |*̥̲̅ ̲̅†̲̅| |>̲̅-̲̅| 04:29, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal plans

What are people's thoughts about ways to develop the portal? Do we think it needs any improvements? Would it be worth having any loose criteria over what news articles and stories to include? --Wisden17 14:58, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

When I've updated the news, I have taken items that were posted on the current events page. These include stories about elections, politicians, and things like U.S. constitutional amendments, political scandals, and protests. Do you have any specific preference as to what to include or not include? If we could add items not covered on the current events page, that would be fine with me. (though more work than I can personally take on right now) And, if several people could be updating the news, that would help. Sometimes, I'm quick in getting updates, and sometimes not. --Aude (talk contribs) 21:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ICRC move/creation

Hello all, for the past few months I've been writing a new article for the International Committee of the Red Cross (which is currently just a part of the comprehensive International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement article). I'm finally satisfied enough to propose its move into the main namespace, though it's far from perfect. That article is at User:Draeco/ICRC, and I've proposed a move here. This portal seems like a likely place to find informed opinions, so I hope some of you can take the time to opine here - Draeco 18:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tasks and WikiProjects

I changed the template used in this section to use two columns instead of three as with Firefox, the content was overflowing the box. —  Stevie is the man!  Talk | Work 15:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Feminism?

I know its probably a heck of a lot of work but shouldn't feminism be included in the list of "Political theories and ideologies"? Is anyone doing anything with this portal? Lizz612 01:34, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

The portal is regularly updated, mainly the news and current affair section though. I suppose feminism could be included in the Political theories and ideologies section, although I don't quite follow how it would be "a heck of a lot of work" to include it. --Wisden17 19:36, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree. That seems worthy of inclusion due to the movements and their successes.Michael 05:52, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Just wanted to invite you guys over to WP Biography where we are currently voting on implementation of task forces, one of which is Politicians. If you'd like to see it get its own task force, vote now :-) plange 02:39, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Campaigns Wikia

[edit] Executive (government)

I have just done a rewrite so as to be able to remove the {{globalize}} tag. All comments and improvements are welcome. Physchim62 (talk) 16:11, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Republic of China note

At Portal:Politics/Topics#Politics by country, the following appears: "Taiwan (see Republic of China1)." However, the 1 doesn't seem to lead anywhere. I'll remove it momentarily, but feel free to revert if I'm just being clueless. Picaroon 01:10, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Administration (government)

As part of a clean up of the mess that was the Administration article, I moved the primary part of it to Administration (business) and hived off new articles for the half dozen other meanings. One of these is Administration (government), but it is one that is a long way from being a FA! A clean-up would be useful. --Concrete Cowboy 20:36, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suggestion (forthcoming news)

The third free democratic parliamentary election in the Republic of Serbia is about to be held on 21 January 2007. They have drawn much eyes and attention of the world, making it a global interest. These elections are going to be even more tense than the 2000 ones, when the autocratic dictator Slobodan Milosevic lost. The voters are going to choose the path: powerful radical nationalist right, or numerous democratic parties on the other hand.

This could be placed at the news. --PaxEquilibrium 20:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

On Talk:Politics of present-day nations and states I have asked a question about what articles should be linked into by these templates. This relates to a dispute on Template:Politics of Iran regaring Iran international crisis. Anyone who could help with their views would be most appreciated.
