New Hampshire has experienced one of the most dramatic political shifts in America in recent decades. Once a staunchly conservative state that voted for Presidents Nixon and Reagan twice by overwhelming majorities, New Hampshire was known for its strong anti-tax sentiment during most of the 20th century.

However, since the 1990s New Hampshire has often been in the Democratic column in both state and national elections. New Hampshire voted for President Clinton twice in the 1990s. New Hampshire has elected numerous Democrats to the Governorship over the past 15 years. In the 2006 election, two Democrats unexpedectly won New Hamshire's two U.S. House seats. The cause of this shift in the liberal direction is unclear.
