Polessky District

Polessky District (Russian: Поле́сский райо́н) is a district (raion) of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. The district's administrative center is Polessk. District's population: 19,018 (2002 Census).
The district is situated in the center of the oblast, with the Curonian Lagoon to the north. The river Deyma, branch of the Pregolya, runs through the district. Near Polessk, the Polessk Canal connects Pregolya and Neman Rivers, crossing a bog.
The railway line from Kaliningrad to Sovetsk, and the road Kaliningrad–Guryevsk–Polessk–Bolshakovo lead parallel with the shore of the Curonian Lagoon. Economy is centered around fishery and agriculture.
The Polessky Radioactive Ecological Reserve is located here, which is the world's only radioactive nature reserve due to the Chernobyl incident, set up after the evacuation of the local area to observe the effects of radiation on indigenous plants and animals. 57 rare bird species inhabit it, but are not exclusive to the reserve. Wildlife is regularly restocked in this area.[1]
