Polar Atlas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Swedish brand of marine diesel engine. Starting in 1903, the Diesel Motorer AB was set up as a branch of Wallenberg's AB Atlas Company to build Diesel engines under licence from the German inventor. They built the world's first diesel ship for the Nobel Brothers in Russia--the MS Vandal.
The company provided the diesel engine for Amundsen's ship the Fram on an Antarctic expedition and so the company adopted the trade name of Polar. It was merged into Swedish mining giant of Atlas Copco in 1948.
