Pola Uddin, Baroness Uddin

Manzila Pola Uddin, Baroness Uddin (born 17 July 1959) is a Labour politician, the first Muslim woman in the House of Lords.

Uddin was born in Bangladesh and grew up in London. She was educated at the University of North London, where she earned a Diploma in social work. She has worked as a Youth and Community worker with the YWCA, Liaison Officer for Tower Hamlets Social Services, and Manager of Tower Hamlets Women's Health Project.

In 1990, Uddin was elected a Labour councillor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the first Bengali woman to hold such an office in the United Kingdom. She was raised to the peerage as Baroness Uddin, of Bethnal Green in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in 1998.

She is a member of the EOP Implementation Committee, and a trustee of St Katherine's and Shadwell Trust. Uddin has special interests in education, health, children, local government and equal opportunities among others.

In August 2006 she was a signee to an open letter to Tony Blair criticising the UK's foreign policy. [1]

With her husband, Komar Uddin, she has four sons and one daughter.
