Question about reference
I quote the following from the main article, section Animal cruelty:
Seen from this point of view, the game consists primarily of Pokémon trainers capturing and bartering in wild animals, coercing them to fight one another.
This section has as a reference the http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/planet0/intpoke.htm link. In other words, the article is using as reference a page hosted in a free host with a little more than 1500 visits. Does the article really need this non notable link? Can't a better one be found? Or just delete the reference, as it is not reliable at all. Otherwise, anyone would get a free account, upload a page, and then use it to backup some opinion in Wikipedia ;-) -- ReyBrujo 06:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- It is an example of an anti-pokémon site made by someone who, unlike most other anti-pokémon site makers, does have brains. But it shouldn't be a real source indeed.
Talking about sources by the way, I see that the Controversy and criticism section has been backed up pretty good over the last few months. Good going! Now the only two things that need a good source are the Animal cruelty and the Americanization.

pokemoncenter.com
I am unsure how to make my comment; I have never commented on Wikipedia before. My suggestion is just for another official Pokemon site - Pokemon Center www.pokemoncenter.com is the official merchandise site for Pokemon. I figured that it should be included at the end of the Pokemon wiki article. Powers.andy 14:57, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- If it's really an official site, it should be there. - Face 17:13, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Zbtb7...
is unrelated to the subject of this article, already has its own article, and is mentioned in the "see also" thing at the top of this article, so it doesn't need a section. Ashibaka tock 18:02, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

- I didn't see you contest my reason for removing it. I don't think Nintendo had anything to do with the naming of Zbtb7. So, it has nothing to do with the subject of the article, viz., "Pokémon is a multi-billion dollar media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996..." It's a totally separate thing. - Nintendo sued them, it's a prime example of mutilation of Japanese names, missing the é. They named it after Pokémon, the ideas of the monsters, which is more cultural impact. It has got plenty to do with the "multi-billion dollar media franchise". Highway Rainbow Sneakers 20:33, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

- Actually I always thought that disambig on the top of this article was ugly. The Zbtb7 does have something to do with Pokémon because it was named 'Pokemon' and Nintendo sued them about it. It's a nice little section, nice little trivia. It's good as it. Delete that disambig instead! -- Face 18:25, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- The point of a disambiguation is to point people to separate articles that have nothing to do with the subject, like this one. Ashibaka tock 00:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Precisely. The disambig is there to point readers interested in molecular biology away from the game/characters and towards the subject they are looking for. Burying information on the gene deep in the article doesn't help at all for that (who would read through an article on Pokemon hoping for information on gene expression?). I don't mind if you take out the section on Zbtb7 in the article, but I strongly think the disambig should stay where it is. bikeable (talk) 00:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism
So, could someone explain to me how this page got vandalized? --Anonymous dude—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.73.120.13 (talk • contribs) 03:43, May 13 2006 (UTC).
- When was it vandalized? Or did you mean this talk page?( The talk page isn’t protected.) Anyway, pretty simple, someone with an account clicked “edit this page” and vandalized it. Still, vandalism is way down( on the article) since the semiprotection was enacted. This article used to get hit several times a day. And “--Anonymous dude” isn’t good enough. Linking to Serebii
Serebii.net, which I added to the article, got removed. it has everything a Pokemon fan needs to know -- and more. Like Berrydexes, Attackdexes, etc, none of which you could find at Pokemon.com. MasterMew 01:26, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with MasterMew. Even I my self visit Serebii.net and find much inforation relating to pokemon there. Even news from Japan (such as Diaond/Pearl) appeared there. It even has a large fan base with several thousand registered members in it's forums the last time I checked. --fnfd 05:10, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

If Netbattle WAS illegal, I'd delete it right now, but AFAIK it's not. They're not trying to get profits or anything -_- Blue Mirage 09:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- NetBattle isn't illegal. It's not an emulation of any Pokemon game, and as stated above, the creators make no profit off of the software. Even if it was illegal, Nintendo obviously doesn't care about it, as some NOA employees know about NB and have done nothing to stop it.Anyway, the main site for NetBattle isn't supported anymore and has shut down, so we can't add a link for it. Plot holes
I think there should be a part in the article that talks about plot holes.
two that I know of is Brocks mother's death, but she is seen in a the episode it is revealed that Brock left his Ludicolo with his family.
The other being that only Psychics can use Psychic Pokémon as mentioned in the episode where Ash goes up against Sabrina, yet many trainers are seen with them, and in a lost episode that was shown during the Johto years, A Girafarig was featured in episode #158 ("The Psychic Sidekicks"). A whole town was seen using Psychic Pokémon, with no apparent Psychic ability.Yami 07:09, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- It had already been revealed in a Pokémon Chronicles, in "A Family That Battles Together, Stays Together", Brock's mother took over the Pewter City gym. I think the theory is, Brock's mother either went on holiday, it was noted how many varing hobbies she had, or she was hiding in a similar fashion to Brock's father. Anyway, that is too central to the Pokémon anime, but you can bring it up at Talk:Pokémon (anime), if you wish. And Sabrina was stubborn. Cheers, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 09:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

- In the anime article, maybe, but not the main article. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 09:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Brock's mother being dead is a dub edit and later inconsistency as they DID dub the specials they weren't expecting to see his mother mentioned in, let alone appearing as a character in. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.116.140.39 (talk • contribs) .
Remove backmasking comment
I'm talking about this part of the article:
Also, when the main theme song for the television show is sung in English, the lyrics “gotta catch ’em all” are alleged to say “I love Satan” or “oh Satan” when played backwards, which is known as “backmasking”. This has left some Christians and Christian organizations believing that Pokémon subliminally encourages Satanism. However, backmasking in general is highly controversial and debatable, leaving room for much skepticism.
I think it is unnecessary and uninformative. In my opinion it should be removed. People have these sorts of stupid conspiracy theories (hidden messages etc.) about all sorts of things. 'Controversial' is understating it; the claim is complete nonsence. Wikipedia can't afford to comment on every stupid belief that people come up with. Karadoc** 10:58, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Is there a way to mirror PHP pages to which this articles refers, so that they stay in existence? For example this source:
"Pokémon USA Takes Over Pokémon Licensing"
...which does not exist anymore. I have tried to wayback what I can, but the Internet Archive Wayback Machine refuses/is unable to store .php pages. Is there an alternative way to store this usefull information somewhere? -- Face 21:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- It is not that they refuse, either a robots.txt file was changed, or they changed the id format. You usually can find an alternative (and existing) source (in example, this link may replace the previous one). If not, all you can do is assume good faith and believe the reference existed and that, when it was added, was checked by other people. -- ReyBrujo 21:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Electric or Computer
Is is Electric Soldier Porygon or Computer Soldier Porygon? This article uses both. My extremely poor knowledge of Japanese (and the help of a Japanese dictionary) puts it as "Electric brain Soldier Porygon" (Electric Brain being a common nickname for the computer in Japan), but I'd like a more native Japanese speaker to check (the title in Japanese is "電脳戦士ポリゴン"). smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 21:53, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

- Let's look at the kanji. 電 is den, meaning electricity. 脳 is nōzuru, meaning brain or memory. 電脳 is dennō, meaning electronic brain. 電算 densan or 電子計算機 denshikeisanki are the Japanese words for computer, apparently. Either way, just "electric" is not an accurate translation in the least. ' (Feeling chatty? ) (Edits!) 21:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- Accuracy doesn't really enter into it. Per WP:MOS, we should be using the most common English-language name, however inaccurate a translation it may be. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 00:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Beginning of Pokemon
The initial paragraph says that Pokemon was created in February 1996. This is not fully accurate. The initial paragraph of this article does reference that Pokemon is derived from the Japense Poketto Monsutā, meaning "Pocket Monsters". Indeed, Pokemon was initially sold in English under the term Pocket Monsters until the (obvious to native English speakers) connotations of that phrase became apparent and the English name was changed in early 1996 from Pocket Monsters to Pokemon. Pokemon was first copyrighted in the United States in 1995. I'm going to add this into the main article and I'd appreciate it if my change was not removed a second time. editorials
-
- Pokémon, being a popular franchise, has undoubtedly left its mark on pop-culture. The Pokémon characters themselves have become pop-culture icons; examples include the Pikachu balloon at a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a Pokémon-styled Boeing 747-400 (pictured), thousands of merchandise items, a theme park in Nagoya, Japan in 2005 and Taipei in 2006. Pokémon also appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1999. The Comedy Central show Drawn Together has a character named Ling-Ling which is a direct parody of Pikachu. Several other shows such as ReBoot, The Simpsons and South Park have made references to Pokémon, among other series.
Why are editorials like this allowed? I can imagine reading this in Newsweek or Time, but it doesn't sound appropriate at all in a reference work. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.235.238.180 (talk • contribs) .
- This isn't just appropriate, this is necessary for the article. Since Pokémon is a work of fiction, we have to follow WP:WAF and write in an out-of-universe perspective in order for this article to be any good. Banned Eps.
The page speaks of banned episodes - what does it mean by banned? That it won't be shown on a certain channel or that the government made it illegal to show it? --A Sunshade Lust 00:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- If I recall correctly, the choice is made by the TV stations, probably made under pressure from the people concerned about content, such as the Jynx one; some other ones more preemptive, such as the Tentacuel one, and the earthquake. DanPMK 05:15, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- It depends, Nintendo has chosen not to air some episodes so in a sense they are not really banned. TJ Spyke 04:55, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
What are we going to do about Vandalism?
Alright, instead of posting this on all 500 Pokemon articles (that should be about right, right? Because 403 Pokemon, then a bunch of assorted articles...;)) I decided I'd post it here, at the heart of Wikipedia's Pokemon articles. As many of us know, a four year old chimpanzee has been vandalising many of the Pokemon articles. There seems to be no way of stopping this other than locking every article, which would be stupid. Any suggestions? ShadowUltra 19:33, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- The vandal, who if he wasn't on an AOL connection would have been fried by Raul by now according to him, is repeatedly vandalizing templates that appear in all the creature articles, causing a giant *coughs* to appear in every single Pokémon page, and in the case of Friday, the Main Page. The way to fix this problem is to protect the said templates from new accounts editing them, and to block all editors who do this to the templates. At present, accounts need to be at least 4 days old to bypass protection, so this will slow him considerably. Cheers, Highway Return to Oz... 19:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- Now there's an idea that should have been thought up earlier! Realistically, all templates should be protected because they're more mechanical than the articles themselves, which are more content-based, and while any IP address can give potentially good edits to the content of articles, only the more experienced Wikipedians should tinker with the templates. By the way, when it comes to the content of the vandalism in question, I suspect an ulterior motive in calling the culprit a 4-year-old-chimp. ^_^ Erik the Appreciator 01:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

- Great idea, I support this all the way! WikiSlasher 11:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

- It is a risky decision, some templates such as Template:Pokémon species are awfully complicated, while others, like Template:Pokenum, thrives on new users. I think we should discuss at the project talk page, because it is a risky decision. Highway Return to Oz... 11:41, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Older children 'ripping off' the younger ones edit
The recent edit which I reverted included this in the trading card section:
- In Australia, Pokemon Trading Cards caused widespread problems throughout Primary Schools, as older children were 'ripping off' the younger ones. Often causing the teacher to be abused by disgruntled parents. A severe case of rage was when Principal Gabriel O'Keeffe was kinghit by a yobbo.
well while it is funny, it's not in the style of what Wikipedia is for. I thought if it should go anywhere it would be Controversy and Criticism. The info is true, (well don't know about the kinghit by a yobbo part :P) but didn't think it should go in the main section. Schools ban popular stuff sometimes when they think it'll resolve problems, although I disagreed with this action at my old school and thought it was stupid. IMO the kids should be smart enough not to get ripped off. WikiSlasher 11:15, 3 August 2006 (UTC) EDIT: Read it again and found no mention was made about them being banned from schools. Sorry about the misquote, sometimes I read things that aren't there :( Also, the only thing I know that has happened is kids being ripped off, not anything else. I changed the title of this section as well accordingly. WikiSlasher 11:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Pocket Monsters in 1995?
“ | Nintendo originally literally translated Poketto Monsutā — indeed, a "Pocket Monsters" game was created in early 1995. | ” |
OK, where did this come from all of a sudden? Does this statement refer to the Japanese version? (Well, of course it does; it's only common sense that it would have to be a Japanese title.) But that still doesn't explain what the heck it's trying to convey. If anyone would care to enlighten me, please do. Otherwise, I'm removin' it. --Ppk01 12:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Questionable Source
In the Americanization section under Controversy and Criticism the first sentence is documented to source number 21. The first sentence reads: "Both critics and fans of the Pokémon franchise have criticized the apparent Americanization of the franchise, claiming that American companies use Pokémon as a tool to exploit children of their (or their parents’) money". This seems to be a speculation as the source that it is directed from is a Pokemon Crystal game review. In the case that it is speculation, there is plagiarism involved also as a sentence in the game review resembles the first sentence of the Americanization section. The sentence in question reads: "Also, on your way you try to overthrow Team Rocket, a group of evil trainers who want to exploit Pokemon for money".Source 21 This content should be removed to avoid criticism and copyright infringement. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Temblor (talk • contribs).

- Not a copyright violation, but is still completly and utterly and absoutly ridiclous. Even if there is a source, it's still an incredibly ludicous and unreliable source. This shouldn't even be permitted on the Wiki article to begin with, and it's plain stupidity to even have it there. I would reccomend a speedy deletion of that absurdity. Wikipedia is for facts. Not ridiculous heresay from uncredible sources.
Can this: "An example of this is and alleged subliminal message in the original pokemon theme song( if you reverse the line "You teach me and I'll teach you" you can make out "We need money, yes we do"" ....honestly be of any importance or vaule to the article? Alledged or not, it's just absurd to any rational, thinking person. It's inclusion, to me, smells of biased hatred written and linked to with an uncredible source. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.227.191.185 (talk • contribs).

Number of Units Sold
What is the actual number of units sold? And what is the total profit? The article says 150+ million units have been sold, but the next sentence says 143 million. Is there a definite number? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 199.44.20.121 (talk • contribs).
Drugs addition to animal cruelty
An IP user added a passage in the middle of the animal cruelty section, detailing possible drugs references within the series. As there were no references provided, I reverted the addition. If any references can be found that are not used to infer but to source a statement, then I have no problem with it being added again. Thought I'd be courtious and let you all know LinaMishima 19:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- The person might've been referring to the fact that in Pokémon Red and Blue there is a shop called the "Drugs store" which stuff like Protein, Iron, Carbos and Calcium can be bought from (these are given to the Pokémon to improve their stats). WikiSlasher 12:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- There as more, too, including speculation about canabis. If you're interested, it's on the history. Probably debatable information that is hard to reference LinaMishima 12:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Wow that was fast...anyway I must admit I didn't bother to check the history the first time. - Regardless of the drugstore, a reference to "performance-enhancing drugs" is too much a loaded term with its implications toward steroid abuse. Protein, Iron, Carbos, etc. are minerals recognized in an unambiguously positive light as necessities for good health, and I can't imagine any controversy over that--nor is any cited. 19:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Updating the Starters section of the Article
In the Starter's section of the article, it details the starters which can be picked in the various Pokémon games, but it fails to mention the starters for the two Gamecube games: Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Now, granted, in these two games you don't *pick* your starters, but I still think they should be mentioned since they *are* starters for a Pokémon RPG. I'll edit and add them in but if anyone thinks they shouldn't be there, feel free to revert and let me know why they shouldn't be. Undrhil 00:55, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Special split
Under the section where changes in the gameboy games from the first to the second generation there is something I'd like to add. While the article as it exists now has almost everything, they forgot the addition of the Special Defence stat. In the first generation the abilities that a pokemon developed as it grew levels were Speed, Attack, Defence, HP, and Special. In the second generation, the Special stat was split into two, Special attack (equivalent to Special) and Special Defence (opposing stat to Special Attack)

"The multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise"
Does every page about an individual Pokemon have to start with this phrase? It's one of the most obnoxious things I've ever seen on Wikipedia and if I knew how to do it without taking several hours I'd take it out of every article it's in, except the main Pokemon article. Consider, at least, that it becomes quite redundant when looking through multiple articles, and readers can find out such information about the franchise from the main article — knowing how much money the series making doesn't help me understand Wooper any better. Fourth generation pictures?

I'd just like to know why the pictures have been removed, that's all. - NP Chilla 21:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, since the Ken Sugimori artwork was going to be soon revealed, the editors that make up the Pokémon Wikiproject decided that we should just let the images be deleted, until the Sugimori artwork filtered through. The reason they have been removed is before the images are deleted by admins, a bot, a semi-automatic user that runs on a network to do a certain task too boring for human editors, check all the images to make sure they have sources, fair use tags and fair use rationales. If it finds images like that, it pulls them out of articles, and puts them on a list to be deleted within a week if the info required isn't added, which is what we've just let happen. Thanks for asking, and if you have any other questions, they'll be better addressed at the project talk page. Cheers! Highway Grammar Enforcer! 21:21, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

slightly incorrect IPA
the article claims the pronuciation of pokémon is [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn]... i would agree with this, as this is the "correct" way to pronounce it in english. although by stating specifically that it is "frequently mispronounced [poʊ.kiˈmæn]," it implies that [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn] is the absolut correct pronunciation. however, if it is pronounced as it truly would be in Japanese it would actually be transcribed [ˈpo.ke.mon]; no diphthongs and the final /a/ should be /o/. i'm not sure if this should also be mentioned in the article but i just thought it might be important to clarify. --Samusamu 02:54, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

- I think it should be changed back. Just the fact that it was pronounced differently in a song doesn't make the spoken pronunciation variable - by their nature, sung vowels are much more variable than spoken vowels, just because they have to conform with melody and rhythm. As far as I've heard, whenever the word is spoken in the anime, it's somewhere between [ˈpo.ke.mon] and [ˈpoʊ.keɪ.mɑn] (usually closer to the latter). ~e.o.t.d~ 01:12, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions
The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.
- Please expand the lead to conform with guidelines at Wikipedia:Lead. The article should have an appropriate number of paragraphs as is shown on WP:LEAD, and should adequately summarize the article.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Context and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates), months and days of the week generally should not be linked. Years, decades, and centuries can be linked if they provide context for the article.[?]
- There may be an applicable infobox for this article. For example, see Template:Infobox Biography, Template:Infobox School, or Template:Infobox City.[?] (Note that there might not be an applicable infobox; remember that these suggestions are not generated manually)
- Per Wikipedia:Context and Wikipedia:Build the web, years with full dates should be linked; for example, link January 15, 2006.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings), headings generally should not repeat the title of the article. For example, if the article was Ferdinand Magellan, instead of using the heading ==Magellan's journey==, use ==Journey==.[?]
- There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view.
- Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
- While additive terms like “also”, “in addition”, “additionally”, “moreover”, and “furthermore” may sometimes be useful, overusing them when they aren't necessary can instead detract from the brilliancy of the article. This article has 33 additive terms, a bit too much.
- Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “
Allpigs are pink, so we thought ofa number ofways to turn them green.”
- Avoid using contractions like (outside of quotations): didn't, don't, isn't, can't, haven't.
- As done in WP:FOOTNOTE, footnotes usually are located right after a punctuation mark (as recommended by the CMS, but not mandatory), such that there is no space in between. For example, the sun is larger than the moon [2]. is usually written as the sun is larger than the moon.[2][?]
- Please provide citations for all of the
{{fact}}
s.[?] - Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

Major vandalism going on
I mentioned this earlier in an older thread, but I'm saying it again here just to get everyone's attention: since the semi-protection went away a few days ago, vandalism has skyrocketed - and I don't think that's too much of an exaggeration, either. Historically, this article has always attracted a lot of vandals, but nearly all of them are anonymous, unestablished users that are blocked by semi-protection. Granted, semi-protection does turn away the helpful anons too (the history showed at least one helpful edit today), but in my opinion it's much better for the article to stop the vandalism than to just deal with it. We need this thing re-protected. Thoughts? 蜻蛉の目e.o.t.d 23:43, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
