Pokolbin, New South Wales

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pokolbin is the centre of the famous Hunter Valley wine region in New South Wales, Australia. It is a rural locality rather than a town or village. It is located between the towns of Cessnock and Branxton.

There are dozens of wineries, from large multi-nationals to small family run operations. Some famous local wineries include Drayton's, Lindemans, McWilliams, Tinklers and Tyrrell's. Much of the rolling countryside around Pokolbin is under vine. Shiraz and Semillion are the most commonly produced wines in the area. There are various wine shows held in the region throughout the year.

Due to the wine industry and Pokolbin's proximity to Sydney (about 140 kilometres south), there is a vast array of accommodation in the area. There are country resorts, golfing resorts, motels and guest houses - most of which are quite pricey. Not surprisingly, there are many excellent quality restaurants, where visitors can eat well and try local wines.
