Pokia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pokia is a name given to cell phone attachments that are based on old style two piece telephone handsets. Typically Pokia handsets involve the pairing of outdated telephone technology with modern cellphones resulting in a Pokia handset that is generally bulkier than the cellphone it is connected to. This apparent contradiction has stimulated extensive international press coverage and has brought the term into public awareness.
The term Pokia was originally coined by British designer Nicolas Roope. However after running into trouble with phone manufacturer Nokia, Roope's commercial vehicle for the idea was renamed to Hulger. Roope's initial Pokia design was based on the modification of existing handsets and the term is now largely used to refer to this modding activity.
Although Roope is generally regarded as the originator of Pokia concept this has been disputed by MIT student Ali Rahimi who claims to have had the idea prior to travelling to the UK in 2002.
