Poker staking

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poker staking is the act of one person loaning money to a poker player in hopes that the player wins and returns a percentage of the winnings plus the stake back to the stakee. A staker will back this player often known as the stakee. The stakee will then use the money "stake" to play in a poker tournament. If the player is successful and turns a profit then the stakee will split the winnings. The terms are always agreed upon prior to the event.

The concept of staking players has been around for a long time. It is common for poker players to get staked in live events. Online poker staking has also become popular. Typically in live game stakings the players know each other. During online poker stakings it is quite the opposite.

Many people believed that online poker staking could not function properly and fairly. There have been a few forums and websites that have claimed to prove the pessimists wrong.

The use of poker staking to distribute risk among professional players is discussed extensively in the book The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King: Inside the Richest Poker Game of All Time by Michael Craig. ISBN 0-446-57769-3
