Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (劇場版ポケットモンスターアドバンスジェネレーション ポケモンレンジャーと蒼海の王子 マナフィ Gekijōban Poketto Monsutā Adobansu Jenerēshon Pokemon Renjā to Umi no Ōji Manafi?, lit. “Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation the Movie: The Pokémon Ranger and Manaphy, Prince of the Sea”) is the fourth Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation film, and the ninth Pokémon film overall. As indicated by the title, elements from the Nintendo DS game Pokémon Ranger play a large part. Cartoon Network aired the film on March 23, 2007 at 7:00pm and after its premiere came a repeat at 9:30pm.[1]

Yuyama Kunihiko visited the ruins of Rome, the city of Naples and the island of Capri, all in Italy, to get ideas of the setting for the film.[2]

The film is the first film released in North America to include a Pikachu short, which is Pikachu's Island Adventure, since Pokémon: Jirachi Wishmaker.[3]

[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

When the earth and moon become one, the temple will appear... The one who holds the crown of the ocean will become the true ruler of the seas... The call of the people of the water awakens the prince of the sea...

Ash continues his quest to become the world’s greatest Pokémon master with his best friend - Pikachu. In the middle of their travels, Ash and his friends cross paths with a performance troupe, who are made up of descendants of the People of the Water. There they discover the egg of Manaphy, and its protector, Pokémon Ranger Jack "Jackie" Walker. Jackie's mission is to keep the egg out of the Phantom Pirate and his Troop's hands. The Troop's leader, a pirate known as "The Phantom", had searched out and found the egg in the middle of the seas, only for Jackie to take the egg away from him.

Phantom eventually meets up with them, wanting Manaphy who is the key to the hidden Sea Temple. Inside it is the mysterious Sea Crown, which is said to contain a great power. The Phantom desires the Sea Crown's power so he can rule the world. But then, in May's arms, Manaphy hatches! The cheerful Prince of the Sea comes to love its "Mother May", but it's not meant to be. It's up to Ash, his friends, Lizabeth, a member of the troupe, and Jackie to protect Manaphy and stop the evil pirate from claiming the power of the Sea Crown.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • Numerous trainers appear from different movies or games in the movie's opening introduction, including Brendan, Rebecca from Destiny Deoxys and Marina.[4]
  • The remnants of Go-Rock squad in Pokémon Ranger had the same motive as Phantom.
  • This is the first film to have the new Pokémon USA English voice cast since 4Kids surrendered the rights with TAJ Productions handling production for future Pokémon movies and seasons.
  • The film is the first full-length Pokémon film to ever be released in its original aspect ratio on Region 1 DVD; all prior films were released as pan and scan versions only. It is also the first film since Pokémon: Jirachi Wishmaker to be released on DVD with a Pikachu short included.
  • It is revealed in the intro, Rebecca from Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys owns a Tyranitar.
  • During a talk between Meowth and Jessie, Jessie plans on stealing the diamonds and pearls that they assume is with the crown of the sea. Then Meowth says that'd make a great name for a game, an obvious reference to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which was and will be released about one month after the release of this movie in Japan and in America. When they reach the sea temple, James says, "Diamonds and pearls!" and Meowth says, "Let's get through this season first", a reference to the title of the 10th season of the TV show.
  • The film seems to mirror many of the plot points of the movie Pokémon: Jirachi Wishmaker, such as with Kyogre's appearance opposite of Groudon's, May's bond to Manaphy recalling Max and Jirachi's bond, the egg Manaphy was in opposed to Jirachi's cocoon-like container, and the fact that Brendan is shown in the clip at the beginnings of both movies.
  • This is the first time that a Toho production logo has appeared in the beginning of the film (in the American film release). It is unknown why this logo has appeared instead of The Pokemon Company logo and the Pikachu the Movie logo. Toho is a Japanese film production that is best known for making Godzilla films, and distributing the Pokémon films in Japan.
