Pokémon Puzzle Challenge is a video game for the Game Boy Color. It was based on the game Panel de Pon, only with characters from the Pokémon franchise. The characters in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge were based on those in the Gold and Silver games, while those in Pokémon Puzzle League, its Nintendo 64 equivalent, were based more on the anime characters. This game is known to be rare as not many bothered to buy it. However, the game is also focused around beating the Johto leaders in a puzzle challenge in Johto region. The game play mode is divided into 1 Player, 2 Player and Training.

[edit] 1 Player Mode

1 Player Mode features:

  • Marathon - Play until your stack hits the top. Try to earn all the endings. Here you select the difficulty, the block's speed and the Pokémon you play with.
  • Challenge - Battle Gym Leaders. Use combos and chains to attack opponents. !-Blocks helps, too and !-Blocks combos power up attacks. Go as Pokémon Gold and Silver hero boy defeating Johto Gym Leaders (on Easy mode) and further Johto Elite Four (on Normal and Hard mode, after beating the Gym Leaders) (with Will, Koga, Bruno and Karen only - Lance is not mentioned). Here a list of all Gym Leaders and Elite Four characters battleable in Puzzle Challenge:
  • Time Zone - Try to get a high score in a limited amount of time. Get chains and combos for max points.
  • Line Clear - Clear all stages. There are 6 rounds, each with 5 stages (including a Bonus Stage). After beating all 30 stages, a battle awaits. This mode also features Johto Gym Leaders.
  • Puzzles - Divided in rounds and stages, the goal is to clear the block setup in a limited amount of moves (usually 1 to 5).
  • Garbage - Same as Marathon, with two differences: Most obviously, Garbage Blocks of varying sizes fall down randomly from the top. The number and type of Garbage Blocks depends on the Garbage Level (which constantly rises). Also, the scroll speed never changes, probably due to the fact that the Garbage Blocks present enough of a challenge to the player.
